An environmental approach

The environment is a major concern at RIOU Glass.
Once flat glass has been designed, it can be reused and recycled ad infinitum without any loss of quality. It is essential that it be recycled more in order to preserve our resources and reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.
With the implementation of an active and continuous environmental policy, the company intends to reduce its ecological footprint. Several significant actions have already been taken to preserve natural resources.

  • First of all, the company is LOCAVORE, since it has chosen to multiply its transformation factories on the French territory, to favour short circuits, close to its customers, to limit the impact of its activity on the environment. As a result, the entire process of creating its glass products is made in France, from the extraction of the sand, to production and transformation.
  • At the factory level, work has been done to avoid excessive consumption of resources and the negative externalities of production. The VIP plant in Boulleville (27), the group's historic and most developed site, has invested in a water treatment system. This installation has considerably reduced the site's consumption. A significant reduction from 40,000 m3 to 6,000 m3 of water per year.
  • All the workshops at the RIOU Glass plants will soon be equipped with LEDs instead of light bulbs in order to reduce energy consumption at each site.
  • The Group's employees prefer to transport parcels internally by "shuttle" lorries which communicate between the plants. RIOU Glass members are equipped with glass bottles in order to limit the use of plastic bottles.

In the float processing and sorting process and during the glass transformation process in the factory, all glass off-cuts are rigorously sorted into skips for recycling and reuse in the manufacture of glass plates. Currently, the proportion of cullet is 35% and the stakes are high because recycling cullet reduces :

The energy required to melt the materials in the kiln and thus the greenhouse gases: 1 tonne of cullet avoids the release of over 300 kg of CO2 into the atmosphere.

100% of the pre-consumer cullet is recycled.

100% of the pre-consumer cullet is recycled.

Other actions have been implemented at the float level. To protect the air, the plant has fitted itself with filters to control exhaust emissions from the melting furnaces and reduce fine dust and sulphur dioxide emissions.
To control energy costs, RIOU Flat Glass recycles up to 30% of its cullet as a raw material to feed the furnace, which makes it possible to lower the temperature and reduce energy costs. 200% savings have already been achieved.

Since glass is a sustainable material, RFG products meet the standards for the safety of goods and people and for the environment. They protect indoor air quality because glass does not emit Volatile Organic Compounds and helps to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with the Grenelle de l'environnement. Finally, RIOU Flat Glass offers appropriate solutions, as its multi-technology glass products are suitable for public buildings, High Environmental Quality buildings and Low Energy Buildings.

Renovation work was carried out on the float furnace, which reduced its energy consumption by 25%, along with a reduction in CO2 emissions. The flue gas treatment was also carried out to ensure very low NOx / SOx emissions.

RIOU Glass at the heart of a popular initiative

Pierre RIOU, the founder of RIOU Glass, in collaboration with 3 other companies (AtlanteM, FénétréA, Bohelay) has created the company MENREC (specialist in the recycling of joinery).
This company is located on a 100m2 platform in Saint-Allouestre (56).

OBJECTIVES

Valorise the different materials of end-of-life joinery (wood, PVC, aluminium and glass)

To enhance the value of re-use for the manufacture of new joinery and to develop solidarity-based employment.

This structure is in line with the objectives set by the Circular Economy Law (REP) of 10 February 2020 initiated by the government wishing to accelerate the change in the production and consumption model.
